Payroll Cycles Demystified!

The frequency of a company's payroll is not only important to management, but also to employees who rely on a consistent pay schedule to plan their own personal expenses. Although there are no legal requirements dictating how often a business must process payroll, it is best for a standardized schedule be put into place at the beginning of the year and not deviated from unless absolutely necessary. When setting a payroll cycle a company should consider revenue and periods of high cash flow during the month and attempt to plan payroll disbursements accordingly. It is also important to note that a higher number of pay periods also equals higher administrative cost associated with preparation, although offering employees direct deposit can reduce the cost of cutting and distributing paper checks.

Payroll can be processed weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly or monthly.

Weekly payroll is processed once per week and is best for a company with high amounts of consistent cash flow and the administrative capacity to process timecards, etc on a weekly basis.

Bi-weekly payroll is processed every two weeks and is a popular option amongst most businesses, although the date of actual distribution may vary from company to company. This pay cycle is favored by employees because it allows enough pay periods throughout the month to avoid running short on cash. It is also an attractive option to employers because it permits enough time to set aside funds before each pay cycle. A bi-weekly pay schedule will result in 26 pay cycles, resulting in payroll being processed 3 times in a one month period, twice a year.

A semi-monthly pay cycle occurs twice a month, usually on the 15th and the 30th, equaling 24 pay cycles per year. This eliminates the two extra pay periods that occur with a bi-weekly pay cycle while offering many of the same benefits.

A monthly pay cycle occurs once per month. This may be a suitable option for a company with restricted or inconsistent cash flow. However, a monthly pay schedule is frowned upon by most employees because it requires careful and diligent planning on their part to avoid running out of cash during the month after paying expenses.

Outsourcing payroll is an efficient way for companies to eliminate the burden of processing timecards and preparing checks/direct deposits, freeing up business resources to complete other important task. A payroll company can not only ensure payroll taxes are being properly withheld and remitted to the appropriate taxing authority, they can also prepare federal and state payroll tax filings as well.

Compensating Filipino Helpers - What to Include in the Salary and Benefits Package

There's no such thing as free work. Although Filipino helpers are rarely vocal about what they want, they appreciate and tend to stick to a generous employer. Most of them expect much from Filipino "pensiados" (pensioners), foreigners and balikbayans (Filipino returnees) whom many stereotype as rich. This is what the compensation package typically includes:

• Monthly Salary. The amount you quote is a clean, no-deductions figure. About 99 percent of Filipino helpers like their salary that way: in cash and without deductions. At the concurrence of your maid, you may withhold some amount for Phil Health Insurance and Social Security System contributions. You must also take care of the paperwork in such cases.

• Health Maintenance. With few exceptions, Filipino helpers do not worry so much about health insurance. They expect you to take care of these matters, including the cost of medicines and hospitalization. The timid maid usually hesitates to disclose her health concerns though (allergies, toothaches, backaches, stomach pains), as she fears you might replace her with a healthier employee.

• Housing. It's a common practice for Filipino helpers to stay in the same house as their employer. A folding bed with beddings and mosquito nets will usually suffice in middle-class homes, with the living area or the kitchen becoming makeshift maid's quarters. If you reside in a grand domicile, you can follow what most upper class families practice: designate one room for your helpers.

• Meals. Stay-in employment is understood to include three main meals and snacks. Despite severe hunger pangs, helpers are accustomed to eat only after you have finished eating. So, remember to take your meals on time or give explicit instructions to your maid. Filipino culture considers it disrespectful when subordinates share their master's table.

• Rest Days and Vacations. Sunday is the perfect time for many helpers to mingle at the park after attending mass. Many also do some shopping - at their own expense. With vacation leaves, it's customary for employers to shoulder the maid's round-trip transportation costs. The vacation may span for just one weekend or an entire week and is often scheduled on the following occasions: Holy Week, All Saints' Day or your maid's town fiesta.

On instances when you feel generous and wish to reward your maid for a job well done, you may also give gifts. Except for the yuletide holidays, caution yourself from doling out freebies on a regular schedule, because Filipino helpers might come to expect them as part of the basic benefits package.

Physical Yoga Practice for Active Seniors

An active lifestyle is one of the keys to a long life. In our elder years, it is important to keep moving in order to enjoy the wonderful essence of life. Yoga is a fantastic activity for seniors, as it is low impact, promotes overall wellness, and can be modified to suit the mobility of any practitioner. If you have been practicing Yoga for many years, you will see your youth extended, and your ability to practice is mildly affected as you age. Even if you are well into your senior years, and have never stepped foot on Yoga mat, it is never too late to start a healthy habit (though it is important to follow your body's own pace).

Yoga is especially beneficial for seniors because it caters to many of their special health needs. In some cases, Yoga is useful because it helps ease the pains caused by arthritis and limited mobility. It improves balance and stability, reducing the chance of falls. When practiced regularly, Yoga also is known to lower blood pressure. Yoga classes, geared toward seniors, can also help them establish a sense of community with one another and adopt a better outlook on life.

If a senior is a beginner to Yoga, it is best to start off slow, and go at his or her own pace. There is no need to try to push the body to do something that it has not been trained to do before. Applying force in Yoga can cause problems, regardless of a student's age. It is always wise to move through the poses slowly and gently. Adjust the intensity, and time, held in a pose, to meet the body's unique demands. Some of the best poses for seniors to try are relaxing, restorative, and gentle stretching postures. The corpse pose (Savasana) is great because it promotes relaxation and healthy blood flow.

Table, Cat, and Cow poses connect one's breathing to body movements and can be very beneficial to seniors, as well. Pose of a Child is another relaxing posture, which is good for everyone. If mobility is a big issue, Chair Yoga might be the right style to choose. With Yoga practice, at a studio or senior center, students will bring their practice home. This is time to try some gentle postures, flows, meditation, and breathing exercises (pranayama). Each of us has different expectations from Yoga practice, and seniors are no different. Senior Yoga students tend to have a deep appreciation for being pain free, keeping the mind active, energizing the body, and experiencing complete wellbeing.

With a little help from Yoga, and a positive state of mind, each of us can get the best quality life out of our golden years. Remember, it is never too late to create a healthy lifestyle, stimulate the mind, and tone a healthier body. Yoga practice for active seniors is "the icing on the cake."

Light Causes Flecks to Be Bigger in Pearlescent Granite Worktops

I was recently speaking with a consumer who wanted larger flecks in their granite worktop surface. I find it interesting how little people actually know about stone, granite, marble, slate, you name it! This particular person wanted to have blue pearlescent granite surfaces installed in her kitchen and wanted as big flecks in the stone as she possibly could. I tried to explain to the lady that stone such as the kind she had chosen was natural and it came how it came.

I also explained to the lady that the flecks in the stone would actually give the impression under certain light conditions that they grow in size. As the light reflects from the pearlescent markings within the stone they have a kind of glow, which causes an increase size appearance in the flecks. Of course, I also explained to the lady that there are other forms of stone that offer this kind of light effect. Starlight Black, a man made stone formed with quartzite has glass, mirror-like flecks within, which also give off a glow when light shines on them.

This did unfortunately raise the question of whether the flecks found in the quartz stone could be made larger by default, but I said that the vendors who supply this kind of worktop stone all use virtually the same machinery to manufacture it and thus it generally forms the same throughout. Naturally there are still batches where the flecks are bigger, whereas there are also batches where the flecks are smaller, but this is just because of the way they form when they form.

My advice is to go to a showroom and get a strong torch light and then test the differing stone types for the glow that best suits you. Lights can always be mounted in kitchen areas, where they best create a glow on the surface of your stone. Alternatively, you may have a window positioned just right, so as to capture the rays of the sun!

How ever you achieve the glow effect to your stone, it is in my opinion that the glow effect is a much better way to increase the size of the flecks opposed to actually having bigger flecks. Another factor to consider is that if you are to insist on having larger flecks, the price of the stone to obtain, could also increase!
